Attendance

Every school day counts

Regular attendance is crucial for primary school children as each day in the classroom contributes significantly to their learning and development. Research indicates that students who attend school consistently perform better in key areas such as reading, writing, and mathematics. Even a few absences each term can accumulate, making it challenging for children to stay on track with their peers. Furthermore, consistent attendance is linked to a greater enjoyment of school and increased self-confidence in academic abilities. Every day matters in establishing a solid foundation for future learning and success.

We are required by law to keep a record of reasons for children's absence from school.

The Government made amendments to the Education (Pupil Registration - England) Regulations 2006 which came into force on 1st September 2013. These state that headteachers may not grant any leave of absence for holidays during the term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.

The Government updated their statutory guidance for schools in August 2024:

Working together to improve school attendance

Parents needing leave of absence for exceptional circumstances should complete a form at least two weeks before the anticipated start date. The reason for the request should be given in detail.

If absence becomes a concern, the Education Welfare Service may get involved to resolve any problems.

Please ensure all absences are reported. Click here for more information on reporting absences. If you do not inform us of your child’s absence, we will give a first day of absence response call, asking why your child is absent.
