PSHE and RSE at Loscoe

Our PSHE RSE curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

Intent

Our intention is that when children leave Loscoe Church of England Primary School and Nursery, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they have good mental health and well-being. 

Implementation 

To ensure that our impact is thorough, we ensure that all of our planning for the PSHE and RSE curriculum is extensive, and planned progressively following the school’s sequence and progression grids. This is monitored and checked by the school’s PSHE and RSE leader.

We will do this by: 

  • Staff following the knowledge and skills progression document to create a curriculum overview for the year.
  • Staff to ensure that the key knowledge and vocabulary receives the appropriate coverage within each PSHE and RSE unit.
  • Learning is always adapted to make it as accessible as possible for SEND pupils.

The scheme of work we use is a whole school approach in Key Stage 1 and 2 that consists of five areas of learning: Families and relationships, Health and wellbeing, Safety and the changing body, Citizenship and Economic well being. Each area is revisited every year to allow children to build on prior learning. The lessons are based upon the statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education but where our lessons go beyond these requirements (primarily in the Citizenship and Economic well being areas) they refer to the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study which is recommended by the DfE.

Sex Education has been included in line with the DfE recomendations and is covered in Year 6 of our scheme. 

There are meaningful opportunities for cross curricular learning, in particular with Computing for online safety and Science for growing, nutrition, teeth, diet and lifestyle. The scheme provides consistent messages throughout the age ranges including how and where to access help. 

In EYFS we follow a scheme of work that focuses on the following areas: Being me, Celebrating Differences, Dreams and Goals, Healthy me, Relationships and Changing me. PSHE and SRE is also taught in a cross curricular way through the EYFS prime areas of Personal, Social and Emotional development, Communication and Language and Understanding the World. 

Impact 

At Loscoe, our PSHE and SRE Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to establish progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Pupil discussions about their learning.
  • By analysing work in children’s books and matching this to the key knowledge that they need to remember at each stage of their learning, based on planning overviews.
  • Learning revisited and reviewed regularly.
  • Use of assessment quizzes and knowledge catchers.

Once taught the full scheme, children will have met the objectives set out within the Relationships and Health Education statutory guidance and can utilise their learning within their daily lives, from dealing with friendship issues to resilience to making healthy choices and knowing where and how to get help when needed. 

Enrichment and Loscoe Promise

As part of our enrichment plan every child will;

  • Have had the opportunity to manage money through an enterprise project
  • Have met with emergency services workers such as Firefighters and Police Officers. 
  • Know basic first aid 

Careers in PSHE and SRE: 

Careers in PSHE and SRE continue to grow. 

The teaching and learning of PSHE and SRE supports careers, such as:

  • Mental health Nurse
  • Social Worker
  • Teacher  

SMSC

Spiritual development

Through teaching PSHE and SRE, we can also develop children’s spiritual development. There are several opportunities for children to reflect on their own values and beliefs and those of others. Childrens’ spiritual development is shown by their: ability to be reflective about their own beliefs, religious or otherwise, that inform their perspective on life and their interest in and respect for different people’s faiths, feelings and values. 

Moral development

Through engaging with the PSHE and SRE curriculum, children develop the ability to recognise the difference between right and wrong and to readily apply this understanding in their own lives. They can recognise legal boundaries and, in so doing, respect the civil and criminal law of England  Children develop an understanding of the consequences of their behaviour and actions. They take an  interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues and gain the ability to understand and appreciate the viewpoints of others on these issues. 

Social development

Children’s social development is developed through the PSHE SRE curriculum. Children learn to use of a range of social skills in different contexts, for example working and socialising with others, including those from different religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. And a  willingness to participate in a variety of communities and social settings, including by volunteering, cooperating well with others and being able to resolve conflicts effectively

Cultural development

Children’s cultural development is developed through our PSHE and SRE curriculum. Children learn to understand and appreciate the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and those of others, understand and appreciate the range of different cultures within school and further afield as an essential element of their preparation for life in modern Britain. Knowledge of Britain’s democratic parliamentary system and its central role in shaping our history and values, and in continuing to develop Britain.

British Values

Children's learning through the PSHE SRE curriculum significantly contributes to their personal development and promotes the four fundamental British values which reflect life in modern Britain: democracy, rule of law; respect and tolerance and individual liberty. 

Protected Characteristics of Learning 

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. Everyone in Britain is protected. This is because the Equality Act protects people against discrimination because of the protected characteristics that we all have.

Our PSHE and SRE scheme supports the requirements of the Equality Act through direct teaching, for example learning about different families, the negative effect of stereotypes and celebrating differences, in addition to the inclusion of diverse teaching resources throughout the lessons.
