Personal, Social, Health Education & Relationship and Sex Education (PSHE/ RSE)
What you do today can improve all your tomorrows.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
At Loscoe C of E Primary School and Nursery, our PSHE curriculum helps children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to stay safe and healthy, build positive relationships, look after their wellbeing and prepare for life in modern Britain.
We want our children to grow into confident, caring and responsible individuals who understand themselves and others, make informed choices and know where to seek help when they need it.
Our curriculum promotes children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, as well as their physical and mental wellbeing. It prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences they will encounter as they grow.
Relationships education is an important part of this. Children learn about healthy relationships, friendships, families, respect, boundaries, keeping safe and seeking help in ways that are appropriate to their age and stage of development.
Our school policies can be seen here: https://www.loscoe.derbyshire.sch.uk/key-information/policies
What do PSHE, RHE and RSE mean?
PSHE: Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education
PSHE covers a broad range of knowledge and skills needed for everyday life. This includes physical and mental health, relationships, safety, citizenship, economic wellbeing and preparing for the future.
RHE: Relationships and Health Education
Relationships and Health Education focuses on areas including families and friendships, respectful relationships, physical health, mental wellbeing and keeping safe.
Relationships Education and Health Education form part of the statutory curriculum for primary-aged pupils.
RSE: Relationships and Sex Education
Our curriculum builds children's understanding of relationships and their changing bodies in an age-appropriate and sensitive way. Sex Education is included within our Year 6 curriculum in line with our school's policy and curriculum approach.
Our Intent
When children leave Loscoe, we want them to have the knowledge, confidence, values and skills to play an active and positive role within their community and wider society.
We want our children to:
- develop positive and respectful relationships;
- understand how to keep themselves and others safe;
- recognise and manage their emotions;
- understand how to look after their physical and mental health;
- celebrate differences and show respect for others;
- develop resilience and confidence;
- make informed and responsible choices;
- understand their rights and responsibilities;
- develop financial awareness;
- have high aspirations for their future; and
- know where, when and how to ask for help.
In an ever-changing world, we believe it is particularly important that children are equipped to recognise challenges, manage risk and contribute positively to their communities.
How We Teach PSHE, RHE and RSE
At Loscoe, we use the Kapow Primary RSE & PSHE curriculum to provide a carefully sequenced programme of learning from EYFS through to Year 6. The curriculum builds children's knowledge, understanding and skills progressively, with important concepts revisited and developed as children move through school.
Across Key Stages 1 and 2, children explore a range of connected areas:
My Healthy Self
Children learn how to look after their physical and mental wellbeing. Learning develops from recognising emotions and healthy habits to understanding nutrition, physical activity, self-regulation, resilience and how choices can affect future health.
Connecting with Others
Children develop the knowledge and skills needed to build safe, kind and respectful relationships. They explore families, friendships, kindness, boundaries, inclusion, bullying, stereotypes, respect and where to seek help if they feel worried or unsafe.
The Online World
Online safety is taught progressively throughout the school. Children learn about safe and respectful online behaviour, privacy, online communication, reliable information, online influence, scams, bullying and other online risks.
Citizenship
Children learn about communities, rights, responsibilities and making a positive contribution to society. As they progress through school, this includes learning about money and careers, human rights, democracy, equality, the environment and how individuals can help bring about positive change.
Health Protection and Staying Safe
Children develop practical knowledge to help them recognise risk, make safer choices and know when and how to seek help. Learning includes areas such as hygiene, illness, medicines, road and water safety, first aid, emergency help, personal boundaries and responding to situations that may be unsafe.
Growing Up
Children learn about growing and changing in a way that is appropriate to their age and stage. The curriculum progressively develops understanding of physical and emotional changes, privacy, personal boundaries, puberty and where to access trusted support.
Economic Wellbeing and Careers
Children develop their understanding of money, budgeting, needs and wants, responsible spending and keeping money safe. They also explore different jobs and career routes, the skills people need for different roles and stereotypes associated with careers.
Sex Education
In Year 6, children undertake the school's Sex Education unit,"How do people become parents and carers?", as set out in the Kapow curriculum and in line with our school policy.
Throughout the curriculum, learning is revisited and built upon, allowing children to connect new knowledge with what they have learned previously. Teaching is adapted where necessary to ensure that pupils with SEND can access, understand and apply essential PSHE, relationships, health and safeguarding messages.
This progressive approach ensures that our children do not simply learn facts. They develop the knowledge, vocabulary and practical strategies they need to make informed choices, build positive relationships, look after their wellbeing, recognise risks and know how and where to seek help.
PSHE in the Early Years
Personal, Social and Emotional Development is a fundamental part of children's learning in our Early Years.
Learning includes:
- Being Me
- Celebrating Differences
- Dreams and Goals
- Healthy Me
- Relationships
- Changing Me
Children also develop these important skills throughout their everyday experiences, particularly through the EYFS areas of Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Understanding the World.
Through play, stories, discussion, routines and adult modelling, children begin developing the foundations for positive relationships, independence, resilience and healthy choices.
Relationships and Sex Education
At Loscoe, Relationships Education begins by giving children the foundations they need to develop safe, respectful and healthy relationships with family, friends and the people around them.
Relationships Education is statutory for all primary-aged pupils. Through age-appropriate teaching, children develop their understanding of positive relationships, respect, boundaries, personal safety and how and where to seek help.
As children progress through school, their learning builds appropriately to prepare them for the physical and emotional changes that are part of growing up. Our curriculum helps children develop the knowledge and vocabulary they need to recognise healthy relationships, understand boundaries and make informed choices about their health, wellbeing and relationships. The revised Department for Education guidance is intended to support pupils in developing knowledge and skills that enable informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships.
In Year 6, our curriculum also includes a specific Sex Education unit,"How do people become parents and carers?" This develops children's understanding of conception, pregnancy and birth, alongside learning about consent, different types of families and the responsibilities associated with having a baby.
All teaching is delivered sensitively, factually and in an age-appropriate way, taking account of pupils' development and individual needs. We recognise the important role parents and carers play in this area of children's education and aim to work openly and positively with families. The DfE guidance specifically addresses working with parents and openness about RSHE materials.
Further information about what we teach, including the school's approach to Sex Education and parents' rights regarding withdrawal from Sex Education, can be found within our PSHE/RHE/RSE Policy. The DfE statutory guidance also sets out parents' right to request withdrawal from Sex Education.
Keeping Children Safe
PSHE and RHE play an important role within our whole-school safeguarding curriculum.
Children learn about recognising situations that may be unsafe, identifying trusted adults, understanding appropriate boundaries and knowing how to seek help.
There are meaningful links with other areas of the curriculum. For example, Computing supports children's understanding of online safety, while Science contributes to learning about areas including the human body, growing and changing, nutrition, teeth, health and lifestyle.
A consistent message throughout our curriculum is:
If something makes you feel worried, uncomfortable or unsafe, tell a trusted adult.
Mental Health and Wellbeing
Supporting positive mental health is an important part of our PSHE provision.
We give children opportunities to develop their emotional vocabulary, recognise different feelings and explore strategies that can help them manage challenges.
We want children to understand that everyone experiences difficult feelings sometimes and asking for help is a positive thing to do.
As children progress through school, they develop strategies for resilience, self-regulation, problem-solving and maintaining positive wellbeing.
Assessment and Impact
Assessment within PSHE helps us understand what children know, remember and can apply.
We monitor the effectiveness of our curriculum through:
- pupil discussions about their learning;
- reviewing children's work;
- assessment activities and knowledge catchers;
- opportunities to revisit previous learning;
- teacher assessment;
- monitoring curriculum coverage and progression; and
- considering how confidently children can apply their learning to everyday situations.
Ultimately, the impact of PSHE is not simply what children can remember in a lesson. We want children to be able to use their knowledge in real life, whether managing a friendship difficulty, making a healthy choice, showing resilience, recognising a risk or knowing when and how to seek help.
Enrichment and the Loscoe Promise
Learning extends beyond PSHE lessons through our wider enrichment offer.
As part of the Loscoe Promise, every child will have opportunities to:
- manage money through an enterprise project;
- meet members of the emergency services, such as firefighters and police officers; and
- develop basic first aid knowledge and skills.
These experiences allow children to apply their learning and develop knowledge and skills that help prepare them for life beyond the classroom.
Preparing for the Future
PSHE also helps children begin thinking about their aspirations and future possibilities.
Children explore the skills and qualities that are useful in different occupations and understand that there are many different pathways available to them.
Learning within PSHE can connect with careers including:
- teaching;
- nursing and healthcare;
- mental health services;
- social work;
- emergency services; and
- a wide range of community-focused professions.
Most importantly, we encourage children to have high aspirations, recognise their strengths and believe in their ability to learn, grow and contribute.
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development
Our PSHE curriculum makes an important contribution to children's wider Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development.
Spiritual Development
Children have opportunities to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences and develop an appreciation of the beliefs, feelings and values of others.
Moral Development
Children explore ideas about right and wrong, choices, consequences, responsibilities and fairness. They learn to consider different viewpoints and discuss moral and ethical questions respectfully.
Social Development
Children learn the skills needed to participate positively in different communities. They practise collaboration, communication, resolving disagreements and developing respectful relationships with people from different backgrounds.
Cultural Development
Children develop an appreciation of their own heritage and the diversity of cultures, traditions and communities around them. This contributes to their preparation for life in modern Britain.
British Values
Our PSHE curriculum makes a significant contribution to children's understanding of the fundamental British Values of:
- democracy;
- the rule of law;
- individual liberty;
- mutual respect; and
- tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
Children have opportunities to explore what these values mean and how they influence their responsibilities, relationships and lives within school and the wider community.
Equality and Celebrating Difference
Equality, respect and inclusion are woven throughout our PSHE curriculum.
Children learn that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. They explore differences between people and families, challenge stereotypes and develop an understanding of why discrimination is unacceptable.
Our curriculum supports children's understanding of equality and protected characteristics through age-appropriate learning, including teaching about different families, stereotypes, diversity, respect and celebrating difference.
We ensure that resources and teaching reflect the diverse society in which our children are growing up and help prepare them to become respectful, responsible citizens in modern Britain.
Working Together with Families
We recognise that parents and carers have a vital role in children's personal, social, health and relationships education.
We aim to communicate openly with families about our curriculum and encourage parents to speak to us if they would like more information about what their child is learning.
By working together, we can give children consistent messages about healthy relationships, wellbeing, respect, safety and asking for help.
